The wee chocolate Cocker Spaniel is Penny who belongs to Josie one of our Nurses and the wee yellow Lab is Baxter who belongs to Emma who is also one of our Nurses. As you can see they are very cute wee pups and we cannot wait to see them grow 🐶🐶

We unfortunately have to announce that Dave is leaving today to go traveling in Australia and Laurie is starting her maternity leave today. Both have been pivotal members of our team at Donview for many years. Well known and highly respected by our clients they will be very much missed by us all. Laurie will be back and will be popping in here and there but for Dave it’s a proper goodbye! Dave started at Donview in August 2015 and has grown from a very good newly graduated Vet hot off the press from Glasgow Vet School into an excellent experienced Vet with lots to offer his future patients in Australia! Dave you will be very much missed by us all. Laurie, we wish you all the best and look forward to you coming back!

The last eight years have seen an unprecedented leap forward in our understanding of what causes laminitis, and this has significantly improved the way that we are now able to manage this debilitating and painful condition in our horses and ponies.
This year we are seeing an enormous increase in the number of cases of Laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) compared with previous years, with horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes being caught out. Just to refresh – laminitis is inflammation of the laminae- the support system within a horses foot. This is extremely painful and often leads to pedal bone rotation. This inflammation can be induced by a multitude of factors including ‘cushing’s disease’ but most commonly just now we are seeing this as a consequence of underlying, often undiagnosed EMS. EMS causes insulin resistance, which is much like type II diabetes in humans – leaving blood sugar and insulin levels too high. Another issue EMS causes is altered fat metabolism. The most common signs of EMS are laminitis, obesity and/or abnormal fat deposits e.g. a big crest. The most common signs of laminitis are that your horse or pony may be ‘footy’ or ‘poddly’, both of which are frequently confused with stiffness. These ponies can often be painful after having seen the farrier and this can be confused with ‘nail bind’. One of our vets, Andrew Smith, is taking part in The Ride to Arran over the next week. This bike journey is from Belgium to Arran, which is over 500 miles!!
He is raising money for the To Walk Again Foundation, which helps to rehabilitate people after serious injuries and enables them to achieve wonderful things!

We were honored to have Anne French up from Glasgow Vet School yesterday to teach our vets how to undertake advanced heart ultrasound scans yesterday. Anne is highly respected in the Vet world and taught most of us as students, she is a lecturer and senior cardiologist at the vet school! Heart scanning is a specialist technique that usually has to be referred to a cardiologist so its exciting to be developing this skill at Donview. Thankfully due to continued high level investment in our equipment our ultrasound scanner is top of the range (we use many times a day for abdominal scans) so could already undertake heart scans, its just such a specialist technique that its not something vets can teach themselves, so we managed to arrange for Anne to come up and teach us. Thanks to Pepsi, Levi and Noddy of Halfpenny-Farm Animal Sanctuary for allowing us to scan them (they were due heart scans anyway!)
